Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, students are expected to be able to:

  • Understand and describe the devices and services, role of protocol layers and various addressing scheme to support communication s in data networks and the Internet
  • Design, calculate, and apply subnet masks and addresses to fulfil given requirements in IPv4
  • Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts such as media, services, and operations Explain the basic concept of Network Time Protocol (NTP) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
  • Backup and reload the configuration of network switch
  • Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches
  • Check port status, abnormal collision, message flooding and abnormal broadcasting.
  • Use cable tester to check coaxial, 10BaseT, single/multi-mode fibre (specification, cable length, noise etc.) and how to locate a broken fibre.

Entry Requirements

  • 23 years old or above with 2 years relevant working experience; OR Five HKCEE subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including English Language and Chinese Language or equivalent with 2 years relevant working experience; OR An interview and / or aptitude test may be required
